A year of action

February 9, 2014—I want Congress to accept President Obama’s State of the Union challenge to make 2014 a “year of action.”

One area that requires urgent action is California’s drought – potentially the worst in our history. This crisis calls for leadership and real water management solutions, not partisan politics. That’s why I introduced the FORECAST Act last week. This bill would incorporate modern weather science into the operation of many western dams, like our nearly-depleted Lake Mendocino.

Why is that important? Because under existing law, the Army Corps of Engineers must follow rigid operating rules that are decades out of date. Last year the Corps made a “flood control” release from Lake Mendocino despite weather forecasts showing no storms on the horizon. Enough water for 24,000 households was wasted heading into the driest year on record. Debating controversial Delta tunnels and Central Valley dams won’t help with this drought, and wouldn’t help the North Coast in any event. My FORECAST Act is something we can do right now to make a difference throughout the western United States. You can read more about it here.

I’m also pushing to transform the country’s largest and most inefficient vehicle fleet – the Postal Service fleet – into a model of efficiency and environmental responsibility. My FLEET Act would save hundreds of millions of dollars, reduce greenhouse gas pollution, and help revitalize our struggling Postal Service. You can read about it here.

I’ll be introducing more great bills in the weeks ahead, and I’ll keep pushing for action on critical national priorities. That includes extending emergency long-term unemployment benefits to over a million job seekers; raising the federal minimum wage so no full-time worker has to live below the poverty line; passing comprehensive immigration reform, campaign finance reform, and more.

May 2014 be a year of action for addressing our country’s many needs and priorities!

Warm regards,

Jared Huffman

P.S.: From the campaign trail…

I’m pleased to report that we are in a very strong position four months before the June 2014 primary election! Your support enabled us to beat our fundraising goals last year, and this weekend we got more good news: we won 97% of the votes at the Democratic Party pre-endorsement conference, paving the way for the party endorsement at the March Democratic Party Convention!

Meanwhile, the response has been overwhelming for my ”Big Five-0” Birthday Celebration on March 2nd! Former Grateful Dead star Phil Lesh and his Family Band are playing a set, and then we’ll rock to local bandFirewheel (I may join them for a couple songs). The VIP dinner is sold out, but there are still a few tickets left for the main event – click here for details!

Thank you!
