June 26, 2015—The Supreme Court just made a historic ruling in favor of marriage equality!
California has been a leader in legalizing same-sex marriage. From 2007 through 2012 – each year I served in the State Assembly – I co-authored marriage equality bills, and each of the three years I’ve been in Congress I’ve co-sponsored bills to advance this important cause. Now, thanks to this landmark ruling, Americans across the country can enjoy the right to marry the person they love – regardless of their gender.
But our work isn’t finished. Full legal protection for LGBT Americans is long overdue, which is why I continue to co-sponsor federal legislation to protect Americans from being fired because of who they are or who they love. It’s time for Congress to vote on ENDA, a comprehensive LGBT civil rights bill.
I’ve spent much of my career working to advance the ideal that all Americans be treated with dignity, respect, and most importantly, equality. Before getting into politics, I was a civil rights lawyer representing women and groups like Cal NOW in lawsuits that helped level the playing field for women under Title IX. Over nine years as a state and national legislator, I’m proud of my 100% career voting record on marriage equality and LGBT issues. And today, I’m proud that our Supreme Court stood on the right side of history and agreed that marriage should be a right for all Americans.
Thank you for your continued support.
