September 30, 2013—
At midnight tonight, our federal government will start shutting down.
You know I don’t like partisan rhetoric, but I have to be candid about what’s happening in Congress: House Republicans are playing a dangerous game. Millions of Americans will be hurt by the shutdown, including troops and first responders who risk their lives on our behalf. Our fragile economic recovery is being put at risk.
Because House Republicans want to block the Affordable Care Act from taking effect. So, after 43 failed legislative attempts to repeal “Obamacare,” the Tea Party fringe of the House Republican Caucus has convinced the GOP majority to shut down the government unless their demand is met.
We must not allow Tea Party extremists, who constitute less than half of one branch of Congress, to circumvent the majority of Congress and the President through extortion.
I’m fighting back—with other congressional Democrats, and a few brave Republicans—against the Tea Party’s reckless and irresponsible actions. But I need your help.
When the reality of the government shutdown sinks in, reasonable House Republicans will step up and work with Democrats to pass a responsible government funding bill, as they did in the Senate.
But for that to happen, we must keep the pressure on.
Thank you for your support and friendship.
Rep. Jared Huffman
P.S. Midnight tonight is the latest federal campaign fundraising deadline. Your online contribution beforemidnight will help ensure my re-election to Congress so that we can continue the important work we’ve begun together. Thank you!
